BF3 and LOTS OF MONEY

EA and Virgin Gaming have announced the $1.6 million Battlefield 3 "Worldwide Conquest" tournament set for 2012. The gargantuan prize pool marks the largest in eSports history, going "above and beyond" Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's $1 million tournament at the CoD XP earlier in September.

"We’re always looking to raise the bar for our members, to give them truly epic gaming experiences they won’t find anywhere else and Battlefield 3 hits the mark,” said Zachary Zeldin, Co-Founder of Virgin Gaming. “This partnership with EA and DICE is exactly the kind of relationship it takes to deliver on that goal, and we can’t be more excited to be working with them to host the greatest competitive gaming event I’ve ever seen.”

There aren't too many details surrounding the tournament yet, but we do know that both PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will be invited to compete via the tournament's website. There's nowhere for PC gamers to sign up however, which is odd considering the Battlefield series as a whole is somewhat of a PC staple.

“The Battlefield series has always been a very social experience with its best-in-class multiplayer gameplay and we’re honored to have such passionate and loyal fans,” said Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager, DICE. “We want to give them the best Battlefield experience we’ve ever created with Battlefield 3. The Worldwide Conquest Tournament with Virgin Gaming is a great way to celebrate the gameplay and reward our fans.”

This huge prize pool seems like not only a good way to generate some press for BF3, but also to, once again, poke a stick at Activision and Modern Warfare 3. The problem is that sometimes just throwing large amounts of money at eSports events like this doesn't exactly help the overall competitive gaming community; it just helps this one event.

I'd rather a large tournament and then EA saying that they're going to help the competitive scene and hold multiple tournaments throughout the year, or try to get BF3 on the competitive MLG circuit rather than just holding one huge event.
